The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has been continually providing up to date information regarding the dog in Hong Kong who was reported as having tested “weak positive” for COVID-19 in February. The full AVMA FAQ for Pet Parent’s Regarding COVID-19 release is posted below and provides answers to many pet-related questions and concerns, including whether or not pet fur can transmit disease, what to do with your pet if you become ill, and best practices and guidelines for elective and non-elective veterinary visits.
While testing on the two dogs is ongoing, neither dog is showing symptoms of illness at this time. IDEXX, one of the nation’s leading veterinary diagnostic laboratories, has also been conducting their own testing on thousands of canine and feline samples and have obtained no positive results for COVID-19. At the present time the CDC, OIE, and WHO agree that there is no evidence to suggest that pet dogs or cats are a source of infection or disease transmission.
