Dangerous Plants for Pets

We all work very hard to keep our pets happy and healthy. Some of the most dangerous predators live in our own homes. Houseplants and flowers can be DEADLY! And all of those chocolaty treats we love so much around the holidays… Well sometimes our animals love them too. The irony is that those truffles can cause quite a trifle of trouble. It is very important to be well informed when the FedEx man brings you… pretty poison.
In addition to chocolate, there are a large number of poisonous plants and flowers to be weary of, especially around the holidays. One of the more commonly known poisonous plants is the Poinsettia, this plant causes a massive flux of emergency room visits, particularly around Christmas time. Unfortunately this is not the only time of year to be cautious.
The Easter Lily is even more dangerous than a Poinsettia to your pet. Especially our feline friends!
All parts o the Easter lily plant are highly toxic to cats, even at the smallest amounts. If ingested, it can cause kidney failure and even death. Cats must be treated within 18 hours of ingesting the plant, or kidney damage may be irreversible.
Tiger lilies, Japanese showy lilies, and day lilies are also toxic. Lilies are by far the most problematic group of plants, but there are many other bulb plants that are also poisonous such as daffodils and hyacinths.
So remember, while the kiddies are out Easter egg hunting, we should also keep a mindful eye on our kitties.
